Every stump grinding call starts the same way — someone has a stump they want gone. But every once in a while, the call is about roots. Not a stump. Just roots.
Surface roots that have spread across a lawn, crept under a fence line, or pushed up against a driveway or concrete pad can cause real problems.
They're a tripping hazard, they can buckle hardscape, they make mowing a constant obstacle, and they block the clean run that a fence or concrete installer needs before they can start work.

Root Grinding — What It Is
Root grinding uses the same rotating cutting wheel as stump grinding, applied directly to surface roots and exposed root systems. We grind the roots down below grade — typically 4 to 6 inches — so the area is flat, the obstruction is gone, and whatever needs to happen next (fence installation, concrete pour, lawn restoration) can proceed.
Root grinding is the right call when:
- Surface roots are crossing a lawn or path and creating a tripping hazard.
- Roots are running along a fence line and need to be cleared before new posts go in.
- Roots are growing toward or under a concrete pad or driveway.
- You want to reclaim a section of lawn that roots have taken over.
- A contractor needs a clean run along a specific line before starting work.
Root Removal — What It Is
Full root removal means physically extracting the root from the ground — digging it out rather than grinding it down. This is more invasive, takes more time, and leaves a trench or void that needs to be filled.
It's the right call in specific situations:
- The root has already lifted concrete and the slab needs to come up and be repoured.
- You need a completely root-free zone for a deep footing or foundation work.
- The root is large and in a location where grinding depth isn't enough.
For most residential situations — lawn clearing, fence prep, and general landscaping — grinding is the better option. It's faster, less disruptive, and gets the area back to usable more quickly.
What About Roots That Are Still Connected to a Living Tree?
This is an important distinction. Grinding surface roots that are connected to a living tree can stress or damage the tree, depending on how significant those roots are to its structural support and nutrient uptake. We'll always ask whether the tree is still standing before we start on a root job.
If the tree is gone and the roots are remnants of a removed or fallen tree, we can grind freely. If the tree is alive and the roots are active, we'll talk through the implications before we start anything. We'd rather have that conversation upfront than create a problem you didn't know you were signing up for.
How Root Grinding Fits Into Contractor Work
Root grinding is one of the most common services we provide for fence installers and concrete contractors. A fence line with surface roots running across it needs to be cleared before any posts go in. A concrete pour that's being planned over an old root system needs those roots addressed first.
