Most homeowners hire a stump grinding company once, maybe twice in their lives. So it's completely normal not to know what to expect. Is it loud? How long does it take? What does the yard look like when it's done?
Here's exactly what happens, step by step.
For most residential stumps in Virginia Beach and Hampton Roads, we can give you an accurate estimate from a photo. Text us a picture of the stump, tell us about any access considerations (gates, fences, proximity to structures), and we'll get back to you fast with a real number — not a range so wide it's meaningless.
If the job is more complex, we'll do a quick on-site look before quoting.
Before any stump grinding job begins, buried utility lines need to be located and marked. In Virginia Beach and throughout Hampton Roads, that means submitting an 811 ticket — also called a 'call before you dig' request.
811 is the national dig-safe hotline. When you call or submit a request online, your local utility companies are notified and have three business days to come out and mark any underground lines near your work area. Electric, gas, water, sewer, cable, fiber — all of it gets flagged with colored spray paint or flags so we know exactly where not to grind. This step is not optional. It's the law in Virginia, and more importantly, it protects you, your yard, and anyone on the job. WE SUBMIT THE 811 TICKET FOR ALL OF OUR JOBS.
Hitting a buried utility line is not a minor inconvenience. Depending on what's down there, it can mean a gas leak, a power outage affecting your entire block, a severed fiber or cable line, or a damaged water main. Repairs can run into the thousands of dollars and the liability for an unmarked dig typically falls on the homeowner or the contractor who failed to call.
A three-day wait to get lines marked is a small price to avoid that outcome. We build this into every job timeline as a standard step, not an afterthought.

811 covers public utility lines — the ones owned by utility companies. It does not cover private lines like irrigation systems, invisible dog fences, or low-voltage landscape lighting. If you have any of those running through your yard, let us know before the job. We'll ask about it anyway, but the more information we have upfront, the better we can work around what's there.
For irrigation lines in particular, knowing the general path of the system helps us avoid them. If you have a system map or know the rough layout, share that when you schedule.
When we arrive, the first thing we do is assess the route to the stump. Our equipment fits through gates as small as 36 inches, which means we can reach most backyard stumps without issue. We take note of any utility markers, landscape features, or structures nearby and position the machine accordingly.

The grinder uses a rotating cutting wheel with carbide teeth to chip away at the stump from the top down. We work across the full diameter of the stump and — critically — wide enough around the perimeter that the finished area will lie flat.
Standard depth is 4 to 20 inches below grade, depending on your final use plan. For jobs where you're planning to pour concrete, install a fence post, or do any construction directly over the area, we grind deeper. For grass, 4-6” below the surrounding yard grade is sufficient.
It's loud, and it's fast. With sharp teeth and a well-maintained commercial machine, most residential stumps take 15 to 45 minutes each depending on size, species, and root spread.

Once the stump is ground, what's left is a pile of wood chips — a mix of ground stump and root material. We spread or place them in a neat pile based on your preference - you want to use them as mulch for garden beds (just not too close to your house). Either way, we don't leave a mess.
After the chips are dealt with, you're left with a depression where the stump used to be. By adding 3 to 4 inches of topsoil, you’ll be able to bring it flush with the surrounding grade, and from there you can seed, sod, plant, or pave — whatever the plan calls for.
The root system that remains underground will decompose naturally over time. It won't cause problems for most applications.

Start to finish — setup, grinding, cleanup — most residential jobs are done in under an hour. Larger stumps or jobs with multiple stumps take longer, but we work efficiently and we don't leave until the job is done right.
Not necessarily. As long as we have access to the stump, utilities are marked, and we've confirmed the job details with you beforehand, many customers aren't home when we do the work. We'll send you photos when the job is complete.
Call or text us a photo for a free same-day estimate and we’ll get your 811 ticket submitted. Most residential jobs in Virginia Beach run $200–$500.
